Tide Clocks were designed by a fisherman over 50 years ago to show the time between the tides. The moon is the major cause of the tides. The lunar day is 24 hours and 50 minutes. Most East Coast locations have two high tides and two low tides each day. Therefore, the hand on our clocks rotates every 12 hours and 25 minutes, twice each lunar day. It is best to set the tide hand at high tide during a full or new moon.

REPLACING YOUR TIDE CLOCK MECHANISM

To replace the tide clock mechanism, first remove the center pin by pulling straight upwards – just the pin, not the hand. The tide hand is press-fitted to the shaft, so with gentle, even pressure at the base of the hand, pull up to remove it without damage. Now you will see the brass nut screwed to the shaft sitting on the brass washer. Use a 10-11mm deep socket, small wrench or a pair of pliers and unscrew the brass nut. The mechanism is now loose and can be removed from the back, along with the rubber washer.

To re-assemble, simply reverse the process. Here are a few helpful tips for reassembly:

1. When replacing the center pin you should feel some tension. The correct amount of pressure should just keep the center pin in place.

2. The tide hand is pressed onto the white shaft; take care to press it evenly around the shaft and all the way down to the brass fitting. Be sure to align the shaped opening on the hand to the flat side of the shaft so that it rotates properly with the movement of the mechanism.
